Explorers and Botanical Artists

Third graders have been learning about explorers and adventurers in their Social Studies IPC unit.  We brought the concept into Art by introducing the British artist (and scientist AND explorer) Margaret Mee.  Third graders learned that she went out on her own into the Brazilian jungles on a hunt for new fauna and flora.  She would trek out with her paints and pencils, find something new, and make a scientific (and absolutely beautiful) drawing/painting to bring  back to her homeland.  The kids learned that at this time in the world, women did not DO this sort of thing- but Margaret did!  We listened to an NPR interview with her while we worked.  A link to the interview is here: http://huntbot.andrew.cmu.edu/HIBD/Departments/Art/Mee.shtml

The students then used their imagination to come up with plants that had never been discovered before.  They looked at existing plants for inspiration, and some blended different species together!

Here are the kids, hard at work!

And here are some of the final pieces!
